Understanding Biomethane

Biomethane, a renewable gas, is derived from the purification process known as upgrading applied to raw biogas. Raw biogas is acquired through anaerobic digestion of various raw materials, including agricultural biomass, agro-industrial waste, and the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW).

The critical step in this process is refining the biogas to eliminate unsuitable components, particularly CO₂, before it can be injected into the gas network.

The Biogas-to-Biomethane Upgrading Process

Biogas-to-biomethane upgrading is a multifaceted treatment primarily focused on removing CO₂ from raw biogas. This intricate process involves several phases:

  1. Pre-treatment: This initial step prepares the biogas for further processing.
  2. Purification: The biogas is thoroughly purified, removing pollutants like H₂S and VOCs.
  3. Methane Separation: The final phase involves separating methane (CH₄) from carbon dioxide (CO₂).

The result is a valuable renewable energy source: biomethane. Biomethane not only reduces emissions but also harnesses existing networks and enhances national production, contributing positively to resource circularity in the agri-food sector.

Biogas-to-Biomethane Upgrading with Selective Membrane Technology

Various technologies exist for biogas-to-biomethane upgrading, each based on different chemical-physical principles related to gas separation. One of the most widespread and effective methods employs selective membranes. BESA utilises selective membrane technology, particularly AB Packaged BIOCH4NGE systems, which leverage polymeric materials with selective permeability to separate CH₄ and CO₂. This technology ensures near-zero biogas loss during upgrading, making it a sustainable choice.
